HFCS

Have you ever noticed how many products contain high fructose corn syrup? Not just the obvious things like Super Hyper Pink Crunchy Flakes, but try finding a something like loaf of bread or crackers without it. Yogurt. KIDNEY BEANS. Kind of freaky.

  1. That reminds me of when Dark first visited the U.S. many moons ago. He kind of gasped and said in his ethereal voice, “God, you guys put sugar in EVERYTHING. Even your BREAD has sugar in it!”

And don’t forget that’s supposedly the “secret” ingredient of McDonald’s french fries.

  2. I rather like sugar – it’s a lot harder to find it in things, though. Blame companies like ADM that pushed for corn subsidies and high tariffs on imported sugar (the US pays about twice the world market price for sugar).

It’s also amazing that store-bought bread, or crackers have about 12 lines worth of ingredients in them. I know when I make bread, I don’t even put in 12 ingredients period!

  3. I was reading some things recently about how it could be bad for you, so I told Cabol we should start trying to avoid buying stuff with it inside when we go grocery shopping. That’s when I started reading labels.

Surprisingly, some things you don’t expect to have it (Wheat Thins) do, but things you expect to find it in (overly glazed cinnamon roll in the vending machine) don’t.

On the plus side, I don’t think I’ve had any Coke all week.

  4. Well, not *our* pickles. Although I think some of the jars we have are a few years old now (we definitely haven’t made any since we left MI), so they may have scarier things inside than corn syrup. :)

  5. Speaking of SUGAR
Don’t know when you did it, but thanks for putting Anya’s one year picture on her one year blog page. Soon she will no longer fit on the changing table. Granny thanks you again.
