Berries

Posted on

It’s blackberry time of the year again! Yesterday I mowed around the large bush at the end of our driveway, and came away with a small bowl of berries. It looks like we missed when the ones up on the hill ripened, or the heat got to them, since there were only dried stubs left.

On the way up from the berries today, I saw a small crushed creature in the driveway. This isn’t really an unusual occurrence, and usually they are toads we’ve run over in the early morning or evening. This one was different, though, since it apparently had these:

I don’t think we have crabs around here. I guess it could have been a crayfish, but it’s a good ways to the nearest creek that could support them. Cabol thinks a bird dropped it. I’m nervously watching my toes for rabid land crabs.

  1. On further examination of the remains (well, the legs anyways), I’m pretty sure it was a large crayfish. I suppose it’s possible we have some in our pond and it ventured out onto land in search of water during the dry spell, but I’ve never seen any before (and they don’t really have any rocks to hide under).
