New toy

Our new $267 riding mower, courtesy of the Sears Outlet website.

I was a little concerned when it wouldn’t turn over last night, but I borrowed a battery charger today from my boss, and it turns out the battery was mostly drained. Charged it for awhile tonight, and it started up on the first try. I took it down the hill and back. It’s been probably 20 years since I’ve last driven a riding mower, and our hilly, uneven ground was a little scary. But I managed not to tip over!

  1. Looks snazzy! Have fun! Hope you don’t run over as many “unauthorized things” I did when we first got ours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Love to all, Linda

  2. Pretty, shiny, red and it has headlights! Very nice. BUT please be careful! After reading the owners manual for ours navigating hills can be very dangerous. As always, I am a worrier. I want my only son-in-law to be safe.

Andy found a smaller riding mower (30″) on the website for us here in Georgia, $183!!! He is a website bargain hunter extroadinaire!

  3. It does get some getting used to when driving those things. The first time Carol’s brother drove ours he almost ran into the back of his car, ran over some phlox, and gave the lawn a G.I. haircut in many areas!

We have a very small yard, 0.44 acres, in a subdivision and I always resisted buying one for that reason. But, the bargain Andy found for us changed my mind. Also, the last time I mowed with our push, self-propelled mower, the HEAT and HUMIDITY here in Georgia almost did me in.

  4. Today I ran over a piece of quartz a little smaller than a football. It’s now in a few pieces, but I can feel some large chunks now missing in at least one of the blades. Everything still cuts fine, but I suppose it means I won’t be able to sharpen them when they get dull.

  5. It is definitely easier (and safer) to drive up and down hills rather than across them. Although if the grass is still somewhat wet, and high, the tires sometimes have problems gaining traction going uphill when I first start a pass, but that was mostly just down by the pond and barn.
